Etymology[edit]

See *gъlbь. Cognate with Old Prussian gulbis (swan), Lithuanian gulbìs (swan), Latvian gùlbis (swan). Also compare with Ancient Greek κόλυμβος (kólumbos, a diver) (whence also *golǫbь), from κολυμβάω (kolumbáō, dive, plunge headlong, swim).
