Etymology[edit]

From *arm (poor) +‎ *-hert(ī) (-hearted), calque of Latin misericors (merciful, tenderhearted). Parallel calque with, and perhaps influenced by, Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍄𐍃 (armahairts).
