Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *ubetą or *ubatją, from *uba- +‎ *etaną (to eat)[1] or *atjaną (to cause to eat; to pasture, graze), respectively, compare *fraetan (to devour, consume). Presumably related to Proto-Slavic *ovoťe (fruit).
