From Proto-Germanic *wōstaz, *wōstuz +‎ *-ī (adjective suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁weh₂-s-to-s, *h₁weh₂-s-tu-s, from *h₁weh₂- (“to leave, abandon”). Cognate with Latin vāstus (“empty; wasted; vast”), Old Irish fás (“empty, void, uninhabited”).
