From *ɪ́- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ *tɔ̃́ (to eject, to spit). Perhaps related to Igbo asọ, Fon atán, and Ibibio etap. A change between /s/ and /t/ is common cross-linguistically. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Volta-Congo *-ta-
