The Wiyot term is melak (“deer, elk”), which may derive from Chinook Jargon múlak (according to Anthony P Grant, who wrote Chinook Jargon and its distribution, in the Atlas of Languages of Intercultural Communication in the Pacific, citing Gibbs 1863 and Teeter-Nichols 1993). - -sche (discuss) 05:22, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

- Wiyot is béhlakw (the initial m- is a morphophonetical stem transformation caused by the h- of the possessive paradigm). Could be a back-formation though. Thadh (talk) 20:27, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
