Reconstruction[edit]

The form of this prefix might actually be *anda-, and therefore represent a different derivation from *h₂ent- than *andi. Possibly a secondary thematic accusative *andą? The prefix seems to show two branches of meaning in Gothic: "to, towards, forth" and "against, back, away (from)". At least if I understand the semantics correctly.

In Gothic, the thematic -a- is lost almost exclusively in verbs, while the nouns that show loss could be explained as verbal derivations. This might be because of the secondary stress (or lack of stress?) for preverbs in Proto-Germanic compound verbs. Otherwise we would have to reconstruct two separate prefixes, one for nouns and one for verbs. Anglom (talk) 23:55, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Old Norse ann-[edit]

Old Norse possesses a prefix 'ann-' < *anþa-, which presumably arose in initial-stressed nouns, more or less parallel to *und(a) and *unþa-. Anglom (talk) 02:33, 19 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
