Finno-Ugric Etymology[edit]
I deleted the claim that this word comes from "a compound of Proto-Uralic *kéne (“hemp”) + *piš (“to burn; nettle”)". This seems really dubious and no source is given. The suffix *-iz in Proto-Germanic and -is in Latin and Greek are nominative singular noun endings, not part of the root. I left the claim that that it comes from Scythian.
If there's a source for this derivation, please add it back, but please cite it, and be explicit about who and what sources this interpretation of the etymology comes from. Namnagar (talk) 19:09, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
