Variants?[edit]

Is this the most common reconstruction of the PIE word? I've seen at least three others on Wiktionary (Appendix:Proto-Indo-European/bʰərgʰ-, Appendix:Proto-Indo-European/bʰergʰ-, and Appendix:Proto-Indo-European/bʰergʰ), all of which have articles linking to them. --334a (talk) 15:58, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

As far as I know, PIE has no vowel ə, at least not phonemically. Rather, ə is generally considered to be the pronunciation of the consonant h₁ when it occurs between two consonants. Sometimes of h₂ and h₃ as well, then it's occasionally written ə₁, ə₂, ə₃. As for the difference between g and ǵ, that's a matter of the centum/satem difference. I don't know if there are any satem languages that have descendants of this root, if there are they should probably give the definitive answer. —CodeCat 17:51, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bang up job[edit]

Bang up job improving this entry, @JohnC5!

@Victar: no problem! I'll mention that you might wanna read mw:Manual:Echo#Technical_details for how pings work specifically. You've been pinging me unsuccessfully a bunch lately, and I hate missing when people want my attention. —JohnC5 04:07, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@JohnC5: Really? How else am I supposed to notify people if not using {{ping}}? --Victar (talk) 04:14, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Victar: Sorry if that was unclear. You should continue pinging people with {{ping}} and {{reply}} to notify them. I'm saying you need to read the specs for how it works so that it actually pings them. Just a bit ago you added a ping to me in the Etymology Scriptorium which I didn't get because you added it to a preëxisting block of text, and I also didn't get the ping at the top of this conversation because you didn't sign it. All the rules are in that link in my last response. Cheers! —JohnC5 04:19, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ah, good to know. Thanks. --Victar (talk) 04:27, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
