Strange vowel

The proposed /o/ → /e/ shift to yield OJP yeda seems quite strange.

Reconstruction still problematic as of 2023-05-03

@Chuterix, the current reconstruction of /yəEnta/ is super strange and problematic.

• The notation using E is unclear. This is not a glyph normally used in phonetics or Japanese romanization.

→ What does this signify?

• We know that OJP disallows vowel clusters within a single morpheme, often eliding or fusing otherwise-adjacent vowels.

→ What is this proposed diphthong? Is there any evidence at all for this? Does this reconstructed diphthong appear in any other terms?

Digging further, references regarding the Japanese term eda seem to suggest that this might be a compound.

• In particular, consider the Kotobank NKD entry for 枝, showing OJP readings of both ye and yo. Or more specifically, ⟨ye⟩ → /je/ and ⟨yo₂⟩ → /jə/.
• Notably, both the NKD and Kojien (here at Sakura Paris) indicate that the yo reading was a shift from ye -- which is more feasible with the reconstructed /jə/ pronunciation for OJP ⟨yo₂⟩.
