Surname derived from the demonym rijitanu (now mostly subseded by riggitanu), from Late Latin rhēgītanus (attested in the 5th-century De haeresi et historia Eutychiana), from Rhēgium +‎ -ītānus, ultimately from Latin Rhegium, from Ancient Greek Ῥήγιον (Rhḗgion).
