Probably from German Low German Sellskupp, from Middle Low German sellschap, from Old Saxon *selliskap, from Proto-Germanic *saljaskapiz, a derivative of Proto-Germanic *saljô, *gasaljô, from *salją (“building; dwelling; room”). Compare Middle Low German sellschap, Middle High German sellschaft, German Gesellschaft.
