Etymology[edit]

Compound of södra (south) +‎ ljunga (heaters; moor). Originally only Ljunga, but södra (south) was added in 1886 to differentiate from Norra Ljunga in Västbo hundred.[1]

Earliest known form attested since 1374 as Medieval Latin parochia Lyonga.[1]
