Etymology

First attested as slupewiic in 1280-1287. Compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch wyc (“farmstead, village, settlement”) or wyc (“inlet, side channel”). The first element may be related to sluipen (“sneak, slink”) referring here to the hidden location of the settlement.
