From Middle High German steige, from Old High German steiga, from Proto-Germanic *staigō. Related with (but not identical to) more usual Steig, Stieg m, from Middle High German stīc. Related with steigen.

Etymology 2[edit]
From Middle High German stīge, from Old High German stīga (“pigsty”). Cognate with Old Saxon stīga (“pigsty”), whence the modern doublet Stiege (“wooden crate”). Possibly a byform of Proto-Germanic *stiją, whence English sty, but definitely related with it.
