Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle High German steige, from Old High German steiga, from Proto-Germanic *staigō. Related with (but not identical to) more usual Steig, Stieg m, from Middle High German stīc. Related with steigen.

From Middle High German stīge, from Old High German stīga (pigsty). Cognate with Old Saxon stīga (pigsty), whence the modern doublet Stiege (wooden crate). Possibly a byform of Proto-Germanic *stiją, whence English sty, but definitely related with it.
