Etymology[edit]

From Tag (day) +‎ Bau (building, winning, mining). The first component refers to the (sun-lit) surface of the earth, as in the mining terms unter Tag (below ground) and über Tag (above ground). The second component is used in the sense of Abbau; compare Raubbau.
