Etymology[edit]
From Tag (“day”) + Bau (“building, winning, mining”). The first component refers to the (sun-lit) surface of the earth, as in the mining terms unter Tag (“below ground”) and über Tag (“above ground”). The second component is used in the sense of Abbau; compare Raubbau.
