Ukrainian pronunciation[edit]

It's a bit confusing that the Ukrainian pronunciation is given as IPA(key): [bɔrʃt͡ʃ] and then illustrated by an audio example, that clearly does not match:

Audio:(file)

I'd say the audio recording is [bɔrs:] or at best [bɔrɕː]. Either this should be noted as an alternative pronunciation (if it has any currency) or the transcription should be updated to match. —Pinnerup (talk) 13:48, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

The pronunciation on the recording is influenced by Russian. [ʃt͡ʃ] is the official pronunciation but [ɕː] is quite common. You can listen on Youtube how Ukrainians usually pronounce ще не вме́рла Украї́на (šče ne vmérla Ukrajína, Ukraine hasn't died yet) (national anthem) - listen to a rap version here (not the real anthem!) or one of the most common words що (ščo). --Anatoli T. @Pinnerup The correct Ukrainian pronunciation should be as in here at about 2:07 (... i ще о́чi не дрiма́ли ...). --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 14:35, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Atitarev Thank you very much for the explanation and for the links. I've looked around on YouTube, that it seems the pronunciation of щ as [ɕː] is almost more common than the "correct" pronunciation, and almost definitely so with young people. Seems like a language change nearing completion. Perhaps eventually the IPA should be updated to reflect this. And thanks particularly for the link to the rap – very moving (found a subtitled version) :) —Pinnerup (talk) 23:39, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
