@Atitarev, Cinemantique, Wikitiki89, Wanjuscha, KoreanQuoter Anatoli, Wikitiki, etc. -- could you review the separation of meanings between прикладывать and прилагать? Zalizyak says that the following goes with прикладывать: "прямое значение: приблизить вплотную, положить рядом" while "прочие значения" (other meanings) go with прилагать. I take this to mean that the literal meaning of placing next to goes with прикладывать. But my main dictionary defines прикладывать as "1. to put (against); place (against). 2. to apply (to); affix (to)." while прилагать is defined as "1. to attach (to); append (to); enclose (in). 2. to apply; exert."
