@Vahagn Petrosyan: It looks like Arabic شُوح (šūḥ, “fir”) and the Aramaic, Akkadian and Sumerian mentioned there. (I did not derive the Akkadian from Sumerian, because I do not know if they are from a common source instead.) So is the derivation from Proto-Iranian *sauč- (“to burn”) too good to be true or is the similarity a coincidence? I mean because you do not compare with actual plant names but verbs “to burn”. - @Fay Freak, the Semitic is too different phonetically. I do not think it is related. The tree-names ending in -ճի (-či) are usually Iranian – նոճի (noči), փիճի (pʻiči). To be certain about the etymology we need to find the plant name within Iranian, but the Iranian family is poorly attested. --Vahag (talk) 13:38, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
