@Calak I don’t know, that’s why I haven’t claimed an immediate source 😐. There are also Aramaic words that are from the same source (which in turn could come from Iranian first of course), and perhaps not all forms attested written into the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon Project – plant names are often avoided by scholars, you know. I have read the Persian page now. The derivations there are not very successful, to say the least. In view of the Sumerian, aren’t you tempted to ditch the Indo-European derivations? Fay Freak (talk) 19:47, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

@Calak Probably we are missing some links across the attestion of the Sumerian and the attestions of the Iranian languages, nothing too worrying, the word had some millenia and we often cannot explain everything, and here Occam’s razor gives us a particularly strong wink to connect the words anyhow. Maybe the answer will be only “from Sumerian, but the details are obscure”, but see I rarely deal with Iranian, you know better how to explain Iranian words.
