Derivation[edit]

Is the sense of "to cut" in the sense of a single blade? Any chance this might be more like "to pinch"?

Curious about possible cognacy with Japanese (hasami), which is from a root *has- "edge or narrowness between two things", giving rise to derivations "to be stuck or pinched between two things", and from the way that shears work, "to be cut as by scissors". The /k/ in KO and the /h/ in JA might be a blocker, but then again I see that Korean 가위 (gawi, scissors) points to Manchu ᡥᠠᠰᠠᡥᠠ (hasaha, scissors) with initial /h/. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:51, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
