Etymology

Seems like a mystery where "concentric" came into it.

Several sources in Japanese all tell, in very similar terms, the story of how a term コンセントプラグ "concentric plug" got shortened -- apparently by a certain Tokyo Electric Co. employee in the year 大正７年 aka 1919. The Japanese Wikipedia article has the best citation I've found, to an anecdote told at an industry-association gala event in 2014:

> 当会の調査・統計委員会の調査結果では、平成26年度の需要予測は93％と暗い話題もあるが、丙午（ひのえうま）の年になので是非とも飛躍の年にしていきたい。当会は前回の丙午の年に創立され、その後60年間も工業会活動を発展的に続けて来ている。大正７年の午年に、東京電灯の小林勲氏が内線規程にコンセントとプラグと記載したことから使われ始めたコンセントと言う言葉がコンセントブロックと言う経済用語に発展した。また同年にはパナソニックの創業者である松下幸之助氏がアタッチメントプラグで創業した。このように午年は飛躍の年なので、従来の安全・安心から情報発信や小型ＥＶ充電用コンセントなど新しい分野に発展していく年と欲しい。

But this still leaves open what seems to me the more interesting question: why "concentric plug" in the first place? Were Meiji-era plugs, or outlets, a particular shape that made the term "concentric" make sense? Or if not, then what? Gnp (talk) 07:31, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
