A designated driver (1) is normally a friend, colleague or family member (2) drives a car that is not necessarily the car belonging to the person who is driven (it may be the designated driver's own car) (3) typically attends the same social event as the person who is driven (4) receives no fee.

A 代駕司機, on the other hand (1) is not a friend or colleague (2) drives the car belonging to the person who is driven, not his own car (3) does not normally attend the social function together with the person being driven (4) receives payment for his services.
