Austronesian comparison[edit]

@Eirikr When you expanded the page, you added a (potentially) dubious and completely unsourced Austronesian comparison. What should we do? Chuterix (talk) 19:28, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comparanda are just that -- comparisons. I don't think I've encountered anyone stating that these must be referenced.
FWIW, I don't recall immediately where I'd encountered the Tagalog suligi comparison, but googling just now finds me this, among others:

Some "Altaic" comparisons on entries (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, you name it), have a {{rfv-etym}} on it.
Anyways, thank you for finding at least a source, even if it's just a amateur blog. Chuterix (talk) 22:15, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What I dimly recall is that my attention was drawn to this page by a persistent anon editor who was obsessed with Japanese folktales, but didn't know any Japanese, and relied on manga and pop-culture sources for their information. Related threads starting here on my Talk page from 2013. At that time, I did some googling about for info on the origins of tsurugi, and while I could not find any internal Japonic explanation for tsurugituruki, I did run across the suligi suggestion. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:01, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The turugi ~ turuki alternation could possibly be explained by compound origin. However, ooking at NKD2 for Heian Kyoto accent info, tur- is HL (shushikei), while ki is (LL; lengthened syllable). I don't know what to say, but maybe there was once a hypothetical pre-Japonic *FLL for turu[g/k]i which irregularly turned to LLL, but without any internal evidence, this is impossible to prove or disprove.
