This may give more insight:

從「女」從「帚」，「帚」亦是聲符。「帚」是「婦」的初文，「帚」本指掃帚，傳統認為打掃是婦女的職責，故用「帚」來表示婦女。後因「帚」專指掃帚，故加「女」旁以表示婦女之義。

《[說文解字》：服也。从女持帚灑掃也。 Oracle bone: 婦 and 帚. The modern Old Chinese linguists probably would dismiss Xu Shen's claim in Shuowen, saying he was misinformed as the *pj- to t͡ɕ sound change had already finished during his time. Wyang (talk) 09:39, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
