Location[edit]

@Bula Hailan Most sources say 居延 is located in present-day 内蒙古额济纳旗东南 instead of 金塔. RcAlex36 (talk) 12:14, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@RcAlex36: Yeah, I wasn't paying attention when editing the entry. I will change the definition. Thanks for reminding me! Bula Hailan (talk) 12:43, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Possible etymology[edit]

It's possibly a borrowing from the Xiongnu / 匈奴 language, since Han-era sources mention the creation of 休屠 and 居延 strongholds, and we know that 休屠 is a Xiongnu title: 益發戍甲卒十八萬,酒泉、張掖北,置居延休屠以衛酒泉。 (Shiji). Also: 自武威以西,本匈奴昆邪王、休屠王地。 (Hanshu). --Frigoris (talk) 15:29, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Frigoris I think we can at least enable OC reconstructions for this. RcAlex36 (talk) 15:38, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Frigoris Technically speaking, we have no way of knowing whether the 平聲 or 去聲 pronunciation was used for 延 right? RcAlex36 (talk) 16:00, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@RcAlex36, I'd say the 平 tone is the much more likely one, see quotation on the entry page, considering 平聲入韻. The rhyming words in the poem were 延 天 圓 然. It appears the 去聲 reading was only used in 曼延 and some more obscure senses according to the rhyming books (see ytenx.org query) --Frigoris (talk) 16:13, 30 May 2021 (UTC).Reply
Tantalizingly, the page at کلان mentions an earlier Parthian word while noticing "ultimately uncertain" origin. --Frigoris (talk) 16:21, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
