Mandarin readings[edit]

Can it be added in which contexts the two different Mandarin readings are used? 24.29.228.33 20:46, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can it be added in which contexts the two different Mandarin readings are used? 71.66.97.228 00:49, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed -- it only has one Mandarin reading. 173.89.236.187 17:13, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

and 木[edit]

What is the difference between the usages of and 木 to mean "tree"? 71.66.97.228 00:49, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

木 is obsolete in modern times. Wyang (talk) 12:36, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese compounds[edit]

I can't seem to find any information about the 木高し (kodakashi) example - this word doesn't appear to be in my own dictionary, it isn't listed on ja.wiktionary.org, and Google translate doesn't seem to recognise it. Can anyone provide any further information on this? GoBusto 20:23, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

⟨ke2[edit]

@荒巻モロゾフ, Eirikr, here's the passage from the Nihon Shoki (Emperor Keikō, entry 8: twelveth year of the ninth month; from himiko-y.com, translation from here):

(see second external link for translation)

It refers to Mi1ke2, a placename. Probably a Central or Western "dialect" or some sort? ~ POKéTalker05:22, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That reading of 木 as け is lemmatized in the 精選版 日本国語大辞典 [1]. According to this dictionary, ⟨ke2⟩ is thought to be a dialectal form of other than Central dialect. It had also existed in the Eastern.--荒巻モロゾフ (talk) 06:34, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Separately, I see the け reading in MYS 4375 as in our entry, and the headline for that chunk of poems (4321 through 4432) states:

天平勝寳七歳乙未二月相替遣筑紫諸國防人等歌

筑紫 (Tsukushi) referred to a region in the north of Kyushu, roughly corresponding to the base of the "thumb" shape. More at the JA WP article at w:ja:筑紫国.
The KDJ entry here at Kotobank also lists MYS poem 4342, part of that same section, with this commentary about the reading:

「万葉集」の例はともに東国防人の歌であるから、古く「木」を「け」ともいっていたのが、中央では使われなくなり、方言として残ったものかと考えられる。
