Explaining the Obvious[edit]

Undo revision 49123270 by Suzukaze-c (talk) I think that for the same reason we would bold the letter 'a' in the word 'acenaphthene' on this page: (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/苊#Etymology), we ought to add some kind of spoon-feeding level explanation here that tells you approximately how the word is transliterated over. I see a dictionary as an exercise in spoon-feeding. Imagine the mindset of someone who has little to no knowledge of Chinese characters- maybe they would think the characters are connected to the meaning of the word 'Los Angeles'- maybe they are wondering how it transliterates. Providing something like this makes it easier to understand the connection. It's obvious to me how to point out the connection on the 苊 page by bolding the a in acenaphthene, but I don't know how to achieve that kind of result on this wildly more important page about 洛杉磯. I know it can be frustrating to work with a newbie, thanks for your help! The current edit which bolds that part of the word seems right to me.--Geographyinitiative (talk) 23:28, 9 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
