Etymology[edit]

What is the source for the following: "So named as music of the shang note (on the Chinese musical scale) is usually sorrowful"? From what I read, the in 商 indicates that the 商 pitch is raised by a semitone (half step). 173.89.236.187 01:48, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

The dictionary seems to be saying that the 商 note is also called 清商 because it's sorrowful. I don't know if that's why the type of music is called 清商. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 00:08, 6 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Chinese music theory texts state that the 商 note and the 清商 note are different, with the 清商 note being the 商 note raised by a half step. 173.89.236.187 04:32, 8 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
