Japanese pronunciation[edit]

I was very interested by the edit about gender-neutrality for this term [1]. If that edit is true, then it seems that the word 'empress' should be added since Wu Zetian was not an 'emperor'. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 18:01, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Justinrleung, RcAlex36, Mar vin kaiser, 沈澄心 Any thoughts? After all, how we describe Wu Zetian in Chinese is 中國歷史上唯一的女皇帝, so the term is certainly gender neutral. The usual translation of "empress" is 皇后, but that term only applies to consorts, and not to an actual female monarch. The dog2 (talk) 19:59, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think we should add "empress" as part of the definition. 皇帝 is the title of the position as the head of an empire regardless of gender. Just putting "empress" might be misleading because English has two senses for it: wife of emperor and female emperor. English "emperor" could cover the "female emperor" sense already (cf. sense 2 of emperor).
