Here is some additional information about this title:
原是唐玄宗时教坊曲名，后用为词调。 据《杜阳杂编》载：“大中初，女蛮国贡双龙犀，明霞锦，其国人危髻金冠，缨络被体，故谓之'菩萨蛮'。 当时倡优，遂歌'菩萨蛮曲'，文士亦往往效其词。”唐时俗称美女为菩萨，女蛮国的人梳有高高发髻，戴金饰帽子，挂珠玉项圈，故称之为“菩萨蛮”。
