Etymology[edit]

@Wyang Could you check the etymology here? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 20:59, 22 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Great work! I didn't realise Schuessler had an interesting discussion on the etymology of this. (Though to me the resemblance to 'sea' seems coincidental - the ultimate source of the forms for 'sea' may be Shan, which seems to be a compound of ပၢင်ႇ (paaŋ2, flat; expanse) +‎ လၢႆႇ (laaj2, watercourse).) @Wyang Interesting! What do you think about the part on Austro-Asiatic? I just left it there, but I couldn't confirm it anywhere, other than at w:Lai (state). — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 14:41, 23 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
The part on this meaning “mountain” is in 《论汉字和汉语的起源》 by 唐善纯, which can be read here. The article and Google search hits of the author suggest that this may be a published 民科 theory, although the theory may be pointing to the right direction. I guess we can keep it. The 《越絕書》 one can be found here. Wyang (talk) 20:23, 23 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Etymology 2[edit]

@Justinrleung Where did you get it? Dokurrat (talk) 06:45, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Dokurrat: It was my inaccurate translation of "草莽" from Guoyu Cidian, which should be translated as "wilderness". — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 06:54, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
