Proto-Japonic *konbo

Vovin (2021) proposes PJ *konbo (or rather *ko₁mpo₁?) > Western Old Japanese kumo "spider" (not "cloud"). The WOJ sound-change */-o₁-/ to /-u-/was indeed abundantly attested (Frellesvig, 2010). However, I hesitate to include this one among the proposal etymologies because a OJ nasal+plosive cluster often became prenasalized plosive then true voiced plosive, not a nasal. @Erminwin: A quick look at JLect's results for 蜘蛛 shows that various Ryūkyūan and Kyūshū dialects have forms that could be congruent with Vovin's contention, with many manifesting as kobu. By contrast, results for 雲 show Ryūkyūan forms of kumu and nmu (where presumably the initial ku- was subsumed into the voicing of the following -m-). It's clear that the proto-forms of these two words were not as close together as their modern mainstream Japanese homophony would suggest. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 06:00, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
