JA etymology

Are you all aware of any Chinese cites earlier than 1855? I'm curious if this was a Japanese coinage during the Rangaku years, or perhaps a usage or repurposing of an existing Chinese compound. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 05:07, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with ancient Chinese texts. But we do use it in modern standard Mandarin to mean "distance". The dog2 (talk) 05:10, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

@Eirikr: Probably Wasei Kango. 新华外来词词典 thinks it's borrowed from Japanese. RcAlex36 (talk) 06:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
