JA etymology[edit]

@Justinrleung, Tooironic, Mar vin kaiser, 沈澄心, The dog2, RcAlex36, any other interested Chinese editors --

Are you all aware of any Chinese cites earlier than 1855? I'm curious if this was a Japanese coinage during the Rangaku years, or perhaps a usage or repurposing of an existing Chinese compound. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 05:07, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with ancient Chinese texts. But we do use it in modern standard Mandarin to mean "distance". The dog2 (talk) 05:10, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I have checked the usual sources but haven't found anything of use. Sorry. ---> Tooironic (talk) 05:31, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you both! ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 06:06, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Eirikr: Probably Wasei Kango. 新华外来词词典 thinks it's borrowed from Japanese. RcAlex36 (talk) 06:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@RcAlex36: Thank you! If so, then the Descendants section needs rejiggering or removal. I'll take Japanese out of that list for now. Would one of you all mind adding in an Etym for the ZH entry? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 23:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
