Etymology

This is attested in the Nihon Shoki of 720, but spelled with 毱 (MARI).

There's Northern Amami-Oshima 鞠 (man-, source here) but the second consonant is irregular. I cannot find Kunigami from the google books snippet search within Nakijin Hogen Jiten. To continue, Okinawan 鞠 (māi), Miyako 鞠 (māl, Sawada dialect), Yaeyama 鞠 (mārï). The cognates point to PR *mari, not **mare, which is important because this rejects the reconstruction of PJ *marəy. But @Eirikr noticed a *mar- root (compare 丸 (maru, “round; circle”)).

FWIW, mari ("ball") and mar[o|u] ("round; circle") appear to be separate derivations from the same underlying mar- root. I don't think a good case could be made for these all being the same word. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 22:28, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
