Are we certain this is from Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó? The laryngeal should have been preserved (like **ḫappā) — This unsigned comment was added by Dghmonwiskos (talkcontribs) at 15:21, 30 April 2018‎ (UTC).

@Dghmonwiskos: There are a few cases where *h₂ seems not to have been preserved in Hittite (or maybe generally in Anatolian). Some people have gone so far as to postulate a fourth laryngeal *h₄ which was a-coloring like *h₂ but got deleted in Anatolian; other people say these words have PIE *a (which was rare but not nonexistent), perhaps next to *h₁. So other possible reconstructions for *h₂epó are *h₄epó and *h₁apó. Personally I prefer the latter hypothesis, but I really don't know what, if anything, the current academic consensus is. —Mahāgaja · talk 11:29, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
