@Quercus solaris If -iest is the suffix, then what happened to the y of the suffixed root word happy? Equinox 23:32, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Equinox At the moment I am still exploring -ier, -iest, and -ied ... TBD. Quercus solaris (talk) 23:36, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
These entries may need to be tweaked, to show how interfix -i- is relevant. As grade school teachers say (or at least as they used to when I was in grade school, notwithstanding what the new math might be), "you have to drop the -y and add -i-." At the moment I am thinking that the entries for -ier, -iest, and -ied could potentially be deleted, if the ontologic viewpoint governs whereby (− -y + -i- + -er) ≠ (− -y + *-ier). Which might vary by schools of morphological theory. To be pondered and discussed further. Quercus solaris (talk) 00:04, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
After a bit more thought, I've concluded that the entries should stay, because whatever is done with the principal case of the theme of "drop the -y and add -i-" — which is -ies — should be the same thing done with the other cases (e.g., -ier, -iest, -ied). @Quercus solaris: I see this as something that might be best handled by a redirect, but I dunno, it's not the hill I want to die on. We do for example have both -logy and -ology. Equinox 04:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
