RFD discussion: February–July 2021[edit]

The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (permalink).

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

Seems analogous to the case of -aise (-ais + -e), which has now been deleted. — surjection??10:32, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Currently it doesn't seem to be SOP-ish: -e (Used to form the feminine of adjectives) and -oise (used to form feminine nouns ...). It appears -e is lacking something and then -oise is SOP. --幽霊四 (talk) 12:06, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Our treatments of -ais(e) and -ois(e) should be completely analogous. There are two ways to analyze a noun such as Français. One is that it is (equivalent to) France + a nominal demonymic -ais. The other is that it is (equivalent to) the nominalization of the adjective français, itself from France + an adjectival demonymic -ais, orthographically modified by capitalization. I am more in favour of the latter explanation, and the etymologies here and at the French Wiktionary agree. We do list a sense of -ais as a nominal demonymic (Used to form nouns that denote where something or someone is from), though, and occasionally use it: the noun Sénégalais is not from the adjective sénégalais but derived as Sénégal +‎ -ais. This may correspond to whether these nouns were formed in modern French or inherited, but the point of making the distinction in this connection is lost on me. If Français is the nominalization of français, then it appears a bit perverse to me not to analyze Française as the nominalization of française. Consistent adoption of the latter position should compel one to declare Grec a nominalization of grec, while Grecque then does not derive from grecque. I find it hard to maintain this with a straight face.  --Lambiam 14:47, 8 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
