Is this singular or plural? Br00pVain (talk) 21:10, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Br00pVain It is singular, since it only ever refers to one particular mountain range. This is a general rule for proper nouns: it is rare for a proper noun to have a commonly used plural. For example, it would be strange to talk about two Albert Einsteins, because there was only ever one Albert Einstein. - excarnateSojourner (talk | contrib) 05:48, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Good general point, but I wouldn't be so quick to apply that rule to mountain ranges. Compare Himalayas (which takes plural verb conjugations, etc.). That said, this particular term does appear to be singular AFAICT, despite the -s ending. 70.172.194.25 05:53, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Actually, both singular and plural uses can be found: "The Amanus is steep on both sides", "The Amanus is the hill country of the Hittites"; "The Amanus are less picturesque than the Taurus", "The Amanus are predominantly non-limestone mountains". The Latin/Greek words from which it derives are singular. 70.172.194.25 05:59, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Good point, thank you. - excarnateSojourner (talk | contrib) 06:13, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
