Etymology incomplete?[edit]

I came here to find out where the -carl- element came from. "Latinized from ... Dalarna" doesn't help. Dal is just "valley" and the -arna suffix is a determinated plural, so the original name means "the valleys" or "the dales", but that doesn't explain Dalecarlia. Somebody please satisfy my curiosity.
