Wikipedia agrees with you. This is the only way in which I can accept it being a euphemism ... maybe it's just how I think but I find it hard to accept reminding someone of the murder of a young child (whom people presumably know about) as being somehow more gentle, even to young ears, than using a vulgar expression.
