The word which is derived from French via Dutch has a short vowel and a final /s/ in German, the word which is directly derived from French is pronounced /gro:/ - the latter seems to be missing here... the words Gros (a) /gros/ = [ɡʁɔs] ('12 x 12') and Gros (b) /gro:/ ('the larger part') are spelled the same now, and even though they are etymologically identical, they are clearly different words. okay thanks. i clicked in only after adding a comment to the pron section. hopefully we can get this fixed. the German wiktionary entry at de:Gros can help but my skills with German arent good enough to make much use of it. Soap 06:29, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
