Synonyms/Alternative Forms[edit]

@Theknightwho: I disagree with the recent move to make Lasa an alternative form of Lhasa. The terms have different pronunciations and different origins. I may have a more limited view of the scope of alternative forms than other people (see Talk:Ryukyu), so I will not take any other action than inform you of my opinion. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 17:41, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Geographyinitiative Would you say they have different pronunciations in English? Theknightwho (talk) 17:44, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Theknightwho Thanks for your question and your work generally. I did find a book (see: diff) that says there are different pronunciations, and they make sense as different pronunciations based on the differing origins. I don't know if that division still exists today- I imagine that the Mandarin Chinese-derived pronunciation will be rare among English speakers who don't speak Mandarin. If you think it's close enough to be alternate, I think there's a good case, despite the divergence of origins. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 20:57, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I would be very surprised if there were - although the origins are different, as you say. To be honest, I doubt there is much consistency with English speakers anyway, as it's not that common a place name for most people. Theknightwho (talk) 21:10, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
