Etymology/Nova Hollandia[edit]

The Dutch cartographer of this map coined it Hollandia Nova in the 17th century. Since nova is not Dutch, I assume it's Latin. Is this the origin of the name New Holland?

If it's Latin, there are then ambiguities between the gender and number of Hollandia. It could be singular feminine or plural neuter according to the declension of nova#Latin. It seems singular feminine, but if I am correct, the plurality of the Netherlands, which is often (incorrectly) referred to as Holland, varies between Dutch (Nederland) and English (Netherlands). -- Cbf536 15:55, 1 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
