Shanxi as a Variant of Shaanxi[edit]

Shanxi and Shaanxi are obviously different provinces of China. But what if some authors spell Shaanxi as "Shanxi", either by accident or just adherence to the normal way Hanyu Pinyin is used in English? I bet that there is some percentage of authors that will not realize the need for the "double a" and will just render 陕西 as 'Shanxi'. Here's an example of that type of phenomena: "In China, an outbreak of endemic human selenosis was reported in Enshi District, Hubei Province, and in Ziyang County, Shanxi Province, during the 1960s." page 400. There is no Ziyang County in Shanxi Province, but there is a Ziyang County that has a selenium problem in Shaanxi Province. Hence I count this as an example of the word 'Shanxi' used as a variant form of 'Shaanxi'. More examples: "The Zhaoling (Clarity Tomb) of Emperor Taizong is built in Liquan County, Shanxi Province." Shaanxi as an Error for Shanxi (Mountain West)[edit]

I found Shilou County, "Shaanxi" in Selected works by Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. page 82. I expect that there could be more errors like this, but they would be hard to discover with a search hence I am putting this example here in anticipation of running across more examples. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 13:29, 5 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
