Talk:Xingjiang

One of the major places this misspelling- which I assume 'Xingjiang' is- was found was in a map on the China Wikipedia page. [1] The (likely) error persisted for near on a decade before I demanded Wikipedia pull up its pants.
I can't be sure that this spelling isn't a legitimate romanization of some kind- it very well could be. Some Uyghur romanizations intentionally try to match up to the way the alphabet sounds in Hanyu Pinyin. I will try to make further inquiries to see if it is possible this is not a misspelling. However, the word is not included in GEOnet referring to Xinjiang, so I think it really seems likely that this is just a relatively frequent misspelling based on the Hanyu Pinyin derived form. The sound of the n and the j can kind of blur together, making it unclear whether or not there might be a letter in between. Geographyinitiative (talk) 22:13, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- The misspelling Xingjiang gets a goodly number of hits at g.b.c, so I think we're justified in having this entry. Then I looked at g.b.c/ngrams for other conceivable misspellings and came to the conclusion that Xingjian was the most common error, until Wikipedia revealed to me that there's a Chinese author named Gao Xingjian, so most of those hits are probably for him rather than misspellings of Xinjiang. Also at ngrams I see that Xingjian and Xinjian are about equally common, but Xinjian is also the correct spelling of a variety of places in China. —Mahāgaja · talk 09:01, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
