@Mnemosientje: Well, not that I'm sure, but this is was Josep Coromines proposed in his Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico, s.v. bandera, making it come from banda 'sign, standard' < Got. *bandwa, but also affirming "No es necesario admitir que en castellano sea de procedencia francesa".
