While the etymology of the phrase no doubt dates back well over a hundred years, I can remember banks in the 1960's being closed on Saturday and Sunday. They opened at 10AM, closed at noon for lunch, reopened at 1PM and closed to the public for the day at 2PM. While I have no documentation to prove it, I believe this is why transactions submitted after 2PM are considered to take place the next business day even today.
