- I suppose we’d have to show an example of where ‘below’ means something like ‘further down’ where ‘down’ is used to mean in a non-Southerly direction for a sense that’s distinct to 1 or 2 to even be possible but I don’t think it’s possible to say ‘below the street’ for ‘further down the street’, for example, so surely no such distinct sense exists? - "further down" is sort of substitutable for "below" in the sense of "later in the same text", e.g. "this is explained below / further down", and possibly in some scenarios in the sense of "in a lower place", e.g. one person lives at the top of a steep zig-zaggy road, and another at the bottom, so as to be "below" the first, and then one says that the lower person "lives below / further down". However, I think it is doubtful whether the two are truly synonymous. I'm not 100% sure whether there are other cases with other senses, or more legitimate cases.
