below vs beneath vs underneath[edit]

What's the difference? Can you put more clear meanings?--Xan2 (talk) 14:15, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

RFV adverb sense 2, "Further down". Seeking examples to demonstrate that this sense exists distinctly from sense 1, "In or to a lower place" and sense 3, "Later in the same text". Mihia (talk) 13:50, 23 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I suppose we’d have to show an example of where ‘below’ means something like ‘further down’ where ‘down’ is used to mean in a non-Southerly direction for a sense that’s distinct to 1 or 2 to even be possible but I don’t think it’s possible to say ‘below the street’ for ‘further down the street’, for example, so surely no such distinct sense exists? "further down" is sort of substitutable for "below" in the sense of "later in the same text", e.g. "this is explained below / further down", and possibly in some scenarios in the sense of "in a lower place", e.g. one person lives at the top of a steep zig-zaggy road, and another at the bottom, so as to be "below" the first, and then one says that the lower person "lives below / further down". However, I think it is doubtful whether the two are truly synonymous. I'm not 100% sure whether there are other cases with other senses, or more legitimate cases.
