German Blei as (improbable?) etymology[edit]

Regarding the slang sense for lead (the metal), John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) points out that Blei is German for lead, but adds "most likely, though, from the colour, as the term is of the very lowest slang". Equinox 19:12, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
